Latest update from Practice Manager

Over the last few months you are likely to have noticed a difference in the way things are being done in general practice as we manage coronavirus (Covid-19).

We want to start off by saying thank you.

Thank you for adapting so quickly to these new ways of working – it has been the drastic, yet fundamental, change needed to ensure the safety of you and our staff.

To slow down the spread of coronavirus, we have worked to reduce the number of people coming into the practice by using online consultation systems like e-Consult (on our website), telephone appointments and video consultations.

Our top priority is, and has always been, to keep you and our staff safe while ensuring you get the care you need.

This is why we ask you to continue what you have been doing to access your GP service.

Please do not visit the GP practice without an appointment.

Instead call the practice or go to our practice website. You can speak to a GP or nurse over the phone, email or have a video consultation. This will often mean you get to see the right person to help you, much quicker.

If a doctor or nurse does need to see you in person then you will be given an appointment to attend the practice.

 

Only coming into the surgery with an appointment means:

You will get seen promptly

You are reducing your risk of catching/spreading coronavirus by avoiding a waiting room

You are helping to keep staff healthy and safe

The practice is able to maintain a clean environment and protect you from the virus

 

Please also remember that if you are offered an appointment then it might to our other surgery. While we realise this could be inconvenient, we think it is important to keep people safe, reduce the spread of coronavirus and get the maximum benefit from the healthcare resources which will be available.

Your records will still be accessible securely to you and to them, ensuring they are able to provide you with the best possible care.  A home visiting service, for patients who are unable to leave their home will be provided.

GP appointments & Bookings

 

The way we access GP services has changed. Below are some frequently asked questions that may help you understand these changes:

Why can’t I walk into my GP practice?

The coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic has forced us all to work differently to help slow down the spread of the virus. All healthcare settings are taking special measures to protect you, the public and their staff. GP practices are working as hard as ever, but differently.

Where possible we want to avoid people having to wait inside a waiting room together, as we know this increases the risk of the virus spreading. Like hospitals and dentists, we have also had to change how we offer our services to you.

If you do need to come in, then we can ensure there are a minimal number of people in the practice, we can maintain social distancing and keep patients and staff safe.

How do I get an appointment?

The easiest and most effective method is to use e-Consult through the practice website, or you can telephone. You will then be contacted by a clinician to talk through your symptoms either over the phone, via email, or if needed and you have the available technology, through a video consultation.

Why can’t I book a face-to-face appointment?

We have adapted the way in which you can get an appointment quickly and safely.

Most patient’s health concerns can be managed over the phone or via video consultation. This is why we are providing you with either an initial phone call or video consultation to decide what would be the best way to help. If we can support you without needing you to come into the practice then we reduce the need for you to travel, and reduce the risk of the virus spreading.

If you do need a face-to-face appointment, you will be invited to attend the practice.

If we can ensure there are a minimal number of people in the practice, we can maintain social distancing and keep patients and staff safe.

What is E consult - You can access e-Consult via the practice website at www.milfordmedicalcentre.com   E consult lets patients consult with their own NHS GP online by completing a quick form which is reviewed by the practice. After reviewing your query, you will then be directed toward the most appropriate help. This might be some advice on self-help, pharmacy advice, an appointment with one of the practice clinical team or another service. Your data is secure at all times – including during a video consultation or telephone call.

What if I do not have access to a smartphone or web camera?

While technology has evolved and supports us all in many different ways in our day-to-day lives, we appreciate not everyone will have access to a smartphone or web camera for a video consultation.

We can still talk to you on your mobile phone or landline.

Will I need to wear a face mask if I come into my practice for an appointment?

To help limit the spread of the virus, we are asking for all patients aged 12 and over to wear a face covering when they come the practice. This doesn’t have to be a face mask, but a cloth covering which covers your mouth and nose while allowing you to breathe comfortably. It can be as simple as a scarf or bandana that ties behind the head.

How do I get a repeat prescription?

How do I see a GP during the evening and weekends?

For evening and weekend access to GPs please either visit 111.nhs.uk or call NHS 111.

What do I do if I think I have coronavirus (Covid-19)?

The main symptoms of coronavirus are:

high temperature – this means you feel hot to touch on your chest or back

new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual)

loss or change to your sense of smell or taste – this means you've noticed you cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal

If you are experiencing one or more of these symptoms then DO NOT visit your GP practice. You should visit 111.nhs.uk/covid-19 or call NHS 111 if you cannot get help online.

You must self-isolate for seven days from when your symptoms started. Anyone you live with, or in your support bubble, who does not have symptoms must self-isolate for 14 days from when the first person started having symptoms.

You must also ask for a test as soon as you start showing symptoms. You can do this online – visit www.nhs.uk/ask-for-a-coronavirus-test

Look after your children this summer

Keep your children out of the sun - especially between 11am - 3pm.
Use a sunscreen of at least SPF30 which protects against UVA & UVB rays
Make sure your child is wearing a sun hat with a wide brim or long flap at the back to protect the head/neck from the sun.
Avoid dehydration - babies & children need to drink lots of fluids to keep them hydrated.
Keep your children cool & safe.

Summer is here! Here are some tips to keep you healthy

Please remember we are not used to hot weather and need to be careful and use a sun block, especially close to the sea, wear hats and loose clothing, keep up a good fluid intake and be especially mindful of the needs of the elderly and very young who can be badly affected by heat and excess sun exposure.

Remember to avoid strenuous outdoor activity like sport, gardening etc until cooler parts of the day.

Sands, the stillbirth and neonatal death charity, offer support to all staff working in the NHS

The death of a baby is life changing for families and excellent care is crucial to their long term wellbeing.
 
Supporting bereaved families can be challenging for professionals who are also trying to manage their own emotions and may feel unprepared and daunted. The pressure the COVID-19 pandemic is putting on the NHS makes this even harder.
 
Sands, the stillbirth and neonatal death charity, offer support to all staff working in the NHS. They have a wealth of expertise and many years of experience providing advice, training and resources to equip NHS staff with the confidence and skills to care for families when the worst happens.

Latest Update from Surgery Practice Manager

The Practice continues to work safely as we social distance and stay safe and well.   Our Milford site will be the hot site until the 31st July; we will then review the situation as to how many patients require isolation appointments and how the virus is behaving both locally and nationally. 

Our clinical staff are still extremely busy and running a total triage system, you will always be telephoned first before being asked to attend in person.  All our clinical staff wear PPE no matter what sort of appointment you attend.  Please remember you can only arrive at the surgery you have been asked to do so. 

Our nurses continue to see patients for important immunisations, cytology and baby vaccinations. It’s important that patients do attend for screening and have regular reviews for their diabetes, asthma and heart disease, we will try and do as many of these over the phone and only bring you into the surgery if necessary.

If attending please do not arrive early, attend alone unless you need assistance, and where possible please try to avoid using our toilets.

In the meantime there has been a lot in the press about face coverings and as said earlier all our clinicians are wearing PPE and we have Perspex screens up on reception, however we WOULD suggest that patients who do attend our Wistaria site do wear a face covering.  Please see government advice below -

Where am I supposed to get a face covering?

There is lots of advice online about how to make them.  Suggestions include using common household items, such as cotton fabric from old T-shirts or bedding.

  • A cloth face covering should cover your mouth and nose while allowing you to breathe comfortably
  • It can be as simple as a scarf or bandana that ties behind the head
  • Wash your hands or use hand sanitiser before putting it on and after taking it off and after use
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth at all times and store used face coverings in a plastic bag until you have an opportunity to wash them

We have a charity basket where you will be able to choose and buy a face covering and donate to the Lymington Basics Bank and Oakhaven Hospice.

Electronic Prescription Service Phase 4 (EPS4)

 
Many of our patients already order their prescriptions on line and collect direct from their pharmacy, our practice has been sending the majority of the repeat prescriptions electronically for some time.
 
Many of you will have been contacted during COVID to suggest a nominated pharmacy to save you visiting the surgery unnecessarily to collect your prescriptions.
 
In addition the NHS is phasing out green prescriptions known as FP10s with the majority of prescriptions now being processed electronically through the Electronic Prescription Service (EPS). This has been planned for some time and is not due to COVID although it will help patients, our practice and your chosen pharmacy enormously.
 
EPS allows prescribers to send prescriptions electronically to a dispenser of the patient’s choice – known as their “nominated” dispenser/pharmacy. Whilst paper prescriptions will continue to be available in special circumstances, almost all prescriptions will be processed electronically.
 
From the 8th June, 2020, if you do not have a nomination of a local pharmacy, you will be given an EPS token.
 
The EPS token will need to be taken to a pharmacy to obtain your medication. Having a nomination will ensure you are able to pick up your prescriptions without needing to collect tokens each time.

Statement regarding uploading images to online consultations

We have been made aware that there is a potential safeguarding risk for people using online methods of accessing GP practice to send intimate images without understanding that these will form part of their permanent clinical record. 

This is especially important to note in the case of parents sending pictures of their children which could potentially be considered indecent images. Therefore we want to be mindful of the appropriateness of such consultations, data storage and sharing.

This issue has been raised at a National level with the GMC, NHSE, CQC and RCGP and new guidance is expected to be issued to Primary Care within the next two weeks. 

In the interim period, and in conjunction with our CCG Safeguarding leads, we would like to offer the following advice to patients of our practice:

Where possible, we recommend that video consultations, where the patient is a child under the age of 16 are not routinely undertaken where safeguarding may be an issue.

We recommend that online consultations, undertaken on behalf of children under the age of 16 or vulnerable adults, requiring visual diagnostics (image or video) of an intimate area (genitals, anus, breasts) are not undertaken.

The CCG is working with online consultation providers, and national bodies in order to develop guidance about the place of intimate remote consultations, and the storage of intimate images, in primary care.

So in the meantime if you are using our on line e-consult facility then any digital image submitted as part of the online consultation, will be stored in your clinical notes.

Advice for Patients who are Shielding

As of today, Monday 1st June 2020, the Government has changed the rules for members of the public who have been shielding.

The change means people will be able to go out with members of their household.

Those living alone can meet with someone from another household while maintaining social distancing.

Those shielding will be advised that they can go outside once a day, with their household or, if they live alone, to meet one other person at a two-metre distance

Support for people shielding such as food and medicine deliveries, will continue.

Those shielding should still not go out to work, to shop or visit friends in their homes.

Hampshire CAMHS are looking to compile a book of letters written by young people about their experiences during the Coronavirus lockdown. We would be interested in contributions from any young person that wants to share their experience with us. It may be a letter to your older self, a loved one or maybe an open letter about something you want to say.
 
There is the potential for considering publishing a limited number of copies, the sale of which could generate monies for youth work in Hampshire.

Wistaria & Milford Surgeries are still here for you

 

We understand that we are in strange and scary times for everyone, life is very different now than it has ever been before.  Your GP surgery has changed and feels very different.  We hope this article will help you to deal with your medical concerns.

 

Our priorities during this time will be to focus on the most unwell patients.  Many of our patients will have medical problems that have nothing to do with COVID 19.  Some things won’t go away whilst we all fight this crisis.  All the usual serious problems like heart problems, depression, strokes and cancer won’t stop because we are dealing with an epidemic.

 

Can this problem wait and if so for how long?

Can it wait until the end of the crisis?  

What can I do in the meantime?

 

Have a look at www.nhs.uk  or  https://111.nhs.uk/ or www.patient.info  to see if you can find out more about your problem. There may be self-care tips or a pharmacy may be able to help first.

 

If you need medical help, we are still here for you and have our full team in place at Wistaria & Milford Surgeries.  

 

All our staff are adhering to the government guidelines regarding social distancing whilst at work.

 

We will continue to limit face to face appointments; however it’s still very important we bring in some patients who require screening or immunisations and we will continue to see patients where appropriate.

 

You should continue to attend your appointment, unless you have been told not to attend or have COVID symptoms. 

 

All our GPs and nurses are triaging appointments requests and we will only bring you into the surgery if necessary (all our clinicians wear PPE).

 

  • If you need medical help from your GP practice, you can contact us either online, by an app or by phone to be assessed.

 

 

  • If you need urgent medical help, use the NHS 111 online service. If you cannot get help online, call 111.

 

  • If it’s a serious or life-threatening emergency, you must still call 999.

 

  • If you are told to go to hospital it is important that you go to hospital.

 

 

 

Prescriptions

  • You can order your repeat prescriptions on the NHS App and through your GP surgery or pharmacy’s online service, where available.
  • We will contact you should you not have a designated pharmacy to ensure you only need to visit the surgery premises if absolutely necessary.
  • If you need to collect a prescription and have coronavirus symptoms or are self-isolating at home – please arrange for a friend, relative or volunteer to collect for you.
  • To help us to keep supplying medicines to everyone who needs them, please only order repeat prescriptions in your usual quantities at the usual time.

 

Routine vaccinations

  • It is important that you or your baby or child still have routine vaccinations. They protect against serious and potentially deadly illnesses and stop outbreaks in the community.
  • If the person needing vaccination has coronavirus symptoms or is self-isolating because someone in the household is displaying symptoms, please contact your GP practice for advice.

 

Cancer Concerns

  • If you have a symptom that you are worried about, you must contact your GP.
  • Your clinician will discuss with you the benefits of starting or continuing your cancer treatment against the increased risks of contracting coronavirus.

Patients with Chest Pain

  • If you think you or a family member are suffering with the symptoms of a heart attack you must dial 999 immediately.
  • If you or a family member develop symptoms such as heavy or tight chest pain that may spread to your arms, neck or jaw, or make you breathless, sick, sweaty or light-headed and that doesn’t go away, this could be caused by a heart attack. Dial 999 immediately.

 

Stroke Patients

  • If you think you or a family member are suffering with the symptoms of a stroke you must dial 999 immediately.
  • You can spot the symptoms of a stroke by using the FAST test:
  • Face - is the face drooping / fallen on one side? Can they smile?
  • Arms - can they raise both arms and keep them there?
  • Speech - is it slurred?
  • Time to call 999 if you see any of the above signs

 

Pregnant Women

  • If you are pregnant it is important that you still attend your antenatal appointments and continue to seek advice from your midwife or maternity team.
  • If you are worried about your health or the health of your unborn baby, please contact your midwife or maternity team.

 

Parents of young children

  • If you are worried about the health of your baby or child, please call 111.
  • If it’s a serious or life-threatening emergency, call 999

Cervical Cytology (smears)

  • Please do not ignore your routine cytology recall letter; it is really important you book a smear appointment we are still providing these. We are willing to make your appointment at short notice to coincide with your monthly cycle and ensure you get this important screening completed.

 

Mental Health

  • NHS is here to support your mental health during the coronavirus pandemic, as well as your physical health.
  • If you are concerned about the mental health of your child, please contact your GP or check online self-referral options for under 18 years olds at:

  • If you are facing mental health issues contact your GP or key worker, if you have one, and continue to access your mental health services as usual. We are also still open for new referrals, via your GP or online.

INFORMATION FOR PATIENTS REGARDING SHIELDING

We are currently receiving a lot of queries from patients who either feel they should have received a shielding letter from NHS England or have received a shielding letter when they do not feel they should have.

NHS England have informed us today that they have sent a second group of letters to patients who should be shielding.

At the moment we haven’t received the codes for the patients who are on this list and we are not able to add or remove people from this list. We have been asked not to send letters to people we feel should be on the Shielded list until NHS England ask us to (they haven‘t done this yet).
Our advice is:
• If you have been advised by a Hospital Specialist that you should be Shielding then please follow the government’s advice on Shielding. A letter should shortly arrive from NHS England but if it does not please contact your Hospital Specialist about this.
• If you feel that you should be Shielding based on the Guidance from the Government but haven’t yet received a letter from NHS England. Please continue to Shield. If you do not receive a letter in the next 7 days then please let us know (ideally by email: whccg.WistariaPractice@nhs.net or econsult via the Practice website). We will then check that you are in one of the Shielding groups, send you the letter from us and upload your information to the NHS England site.
• If you have had a letter from NHS England telling you that you should shield but you do not believe that you need to do this please check with your GP before disregarding the letter. We hope that we will soon be able to ask NHS England to remove patients from the list who shouldn’t be on it.

Children's minor ailments and Coronavirus (COVID19)

At this challenging time, it is extremely important for you to know that COVID-19 is unlikely to make your child unwell, but they like everyone else might be infectious so staying at home when well remains the message. However, all the ‘normal’ illnesses that can make children severely unwell still remain and there is a major risk that parents may delay bringing their child to the attention of a healthcare professional even if they are unwell because of concerns about COVID-19.

 

We would like to assure you that our GPs and local hospitals are still providing the same safe care that they have always done for children. New Coronavirus Hampshire Helpline

A new helpline is now available to provide information and advice, as well as practical support to frail or vulnerable Hampshire residents.

The Coronavirus Hampshire Helpline – Hantshelp4vulnerable - can be contacted on 0333 370 4000.

The helpline is available seven days a week, from 9am to 5pm, and is for vulnerable people who do not have support from families, friends or their local community, and who need urgent assistance with practical issues.

Get the COVID Symptom Tracker

 

Researchers at Guy, St Thomas’ and Kings College Hospitals and the NHS have launched an App to help slow the spread of Covid 19 and identify risk cases sooner.

 

This is being done by asking anyone to self report your health/symptoms daily, even if you feel well.

 

This idea is to get this App to a lot of people fast to collect data to see the hidden cases, the iceberg if you like we are sailing into.

 

The app is fully functional and will be refined over the coming days.

 

By sharing the App it will help to gather data for policy makers to work with.

 

Initial feedback on the site’s inability to register children’s symptoms have been forwarded to the investigators.  Anything further you can add/any feedback will all help to capture what’s going on in the community in addition to what is being captured in tertiary care.  It all helps.

 

No information you give will be used for commercial purposes.

Thank You!

The last few weeks have been very busy for our staff and we would like to thank all or local supermarkets for allowing staff to come in early and do their shopping

 

I would also like to thank two local dental practices (BUPA dental on Gosport Street and Solent House Dental Practice) who have given us their stock of face masks, goggles visors etc as we have had problems ordering PPE

 

Also grateful thanks to Mr Peter Main and the staff of Priestlands for their support and help especially with protective equipment and increasing our low stocks

Many thanks to TESCO in Pennington for the lovely hamper that cheered us up today

Café Nero surprised us with a tray of coffee & hot chocolate on two consecutive days before they had to shut

A big thank you also to the staff at Hoxtons Bakehouse, Lymington for delivering goodies and allowing early shopping for our surgery staff

And my final thank you to our “patient bakers”   Thank you so much the cakes and goodies are very welcome as sometimes lunchtimes have been a bit difficult and a treat certainly lifts the day

COVID-19: The way that general practice is changing

Over the last couple of weeks, you are likely to have noticed a marked difference in the way things are being done in general practice as we manage Covid-19. ​Thank you for adapting so quickly to these new ways of working.

To limit the spread of Covid-19, we have worked to reduce footfall through practices by using online consultation systems like e-consult, telephone appointments and video consultations to ensure we continue providing you with the care you need. 

Our top priority is to keep our patients and staff safe whilst ensuring patients get the care they need. Keeping our staff healthy is crucial so that they can continue to care for everybody, therefore GPs and their staff have been working together with other local surgeries to develop a system which will be able to meet these changing needs.

From now on, when you contact your surgery for an appointment you will receive an initial assessment through e-consult (on the practice website) OR by telephone, by a suitably trained clinician. It is essential that you give an accurate and detailed description of your symptoms when asked. This will allow us to provide you with the most appropriate treatment.

If you have suspected Covid-19 symptoms and, following a telephone assessment, need to have a further face-to-face appointment, this may not take place at your usual GP surgery. Instead you may be directed to another local site that has been specifically set up to better deal with your needs.

If you need to have a non-Covid-19 related face to face appointment and do not have any Covid-19 symptoms, you may still be able to access your usual surgery. However, please be aware that this may change. Services may need to be provided from a smaller number of practices if staff become unwell.

If, over the course of the next few weeks, you do have to go to a different surgery to the one you are used to, you might also see a doctor or nurse who you are not familiar with. Whilst we realise this could be inconvenient, we think it is important to keep people safe, reduce the spread of Covid-19 and get the maximum benefit from the healthcare resources which will be available. Your records will still be accessible securely to you and to them, ensuring they are able to provide you with the best possible care.  A home visiting service, for patients who are housebound, will be provided but increasingly through practices working together.

Our clinical colleagues and support staff will be working flexibly in order make these new arrangements work and, when circumstances change to make it possible, GP surgeries across the area will resume a normal service.

COVID-19: Our surgery plans and how this will affect you

If you have had any contact with the surgery over the last week or two, you are likely to have noticed a marked difference in the way things are being done. We have done this to minimise face to face contact between patients and staff, limit the spread of the Covid-19 virus and keep our practice team and patients as well as possible. The information below shows you how we plan to operate over the coming weeks:

Making an appointment

  • Our GP practice has now moved to a total triage system. This means that all requests for appointments must be made via the phone 01590 672212
  • Each request will be passed to a doctor for assessment. You may find that we treat you by phone, by video link, or we may ask you to come to the surgery;
  • Access to the surgery premises will only be if you have been asked to do so and there will be clear arrangements discussed with you as to how we can safely do this. Please do not come to the surgery unless you have been specifically asked to do so.

Attending your appointment

  • If you need to have a face to face appointment, you may be asked to attend one of the following surgeries:
  • Wistaria Surgery, Lymington or Milford Medical Centre, Milford on Sea
  • You will be given clear instructions by the GP or nurse of which surgery to attend and what to do when you arrive
  • Whilst you may have to go to a different surgery building to the one you are used to and you might see a doctor or nurse who you are not familiar with, your records will still be accessible securely to you and to them.

Repeat prescriptions

  • We may have already contacted you to collect paperwork and prescriptions and we aim to complete this in two working days.
  • If you are able to, please continue to use our website milfordmedicalcentre.com or the NHS App to order your repeat prescription. You do not need to come to the surgery to register to do this;
  • If you cannot order your repeat prescription any other way, then you may deliver this through the outside surgery letter box – this can be done without accessing the reception.

How can you help?

Reception staff will now ask all patients when booking an appointment whether they have travelled recently or have cold/flu symptoms – please answer these questions truthfully so we can manage your appointment affectively and stop the spread of this virus.   Where appropriate we will deal with urgent problems by telephone and only bring you into the surgery if necessary.    E consult advice for non-medical problems is available from our website and we aim to get a response to you within one working day.

What's the risk of coronavirus in the UK?

 

The UK Chief Medical Officers have raised the risk to the public from low to moderate.

 

Health professionals are working to contact anyone who has been in close contact with people who have coronavirus.

 

What's the risk of coronavirus for travellers?

 

There are some countries and areas where there's a higher chance of coming into contact with someone with coronavirus.

 

Symptoms of coronavirus

 

The symptoms of coronavirus are:

 

a cough

a high temperature

shortness of breath

But these symptoms do not necessarily mean you have the illness.

 

The symptoms are similar to other illnesses that are much more common, such as cold and flu.

 

How coronavirus is spread

 

Because it's a new illness, we do not know exactly how coronavirus spreads from person to person.

 

Similar viruses are spread in cough droplets.

 

It's very unlikely it can be spread through things like packages or food.

 

Do I need to avoid public places?

 

Most people can continue to go to work, school and other public places.

 

You only need to stay away from public places (self-isolate) if advised to by the 111 online coronavirus service or a medical professional.

 

How to avoid catching or spreading coronavirus

 

Do

 

wash your hands with soap and water often – do this for at least 20 seconds

always wash your hands when you get home or into work

use hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available

cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when you cough or sneeze

put used tissues in the bin straight away and wash your hands afterwards

try to avoid close contact with people who are unwell

 

 

Don't

 

do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean

NHS 111 has an online coronavirus service that can tell you if you need medical help and advise you what to do.

 

Use this service if:

 

you think you might have coronavirus

How to self-isolate if you're asked to

 

If there's a chance you could have coronavirus, you may be asked to stay away from other people (self-isolate).

not use public transport or taxis

ask friends, family members or delivery services to do errands for you

try to avoid visitors to your home – it's OK for friends, family or delivery drivers to drop off food

You may need to do this for up to 14 days to help reduce the possible spread of infection.

Treatment for coronavirus

 

There is currently no specific treatment for coronavirus.

 

Antibiotics do not help, as they do not work against viruses.

 

Treatment aims to relieve the symptoms while your body fights the illness.

LATEST INFORMATION FOR PATIENTS REGARDING CORONAVIRUS INFECTION

If you have travelled abroad in the last 14 days or have been in close contact with someone with confirmed Coronavirus please check the www.gov.uk website for the latest COVID-19 advice. You may need to call NHS 111 for further advice before booking or attending your appointment.

All travellers who develop relevant symptoms ( for example respiratory symptoms, shortness of breath, cough, fever) however mild, within 14 days of returning should NOT attend the practice, but should remain at home and immediately call NHS 111 for advice.

The NHS is well prepared for outbreaks of new infectious diseases & has put in place measures to ensure the safety of all patients & NHS staff while also ensuring services are available to the public as normal

Important Information for Patients of Dr Alice Mavrogordato and Dr Toni Benning

From the end of December 2019 Dr Alice Mavrogordato will be moving across to our Practice at Wistaria.

All patients currently on Dr Mavro’s list will remain on the Practice’s joint list and you will be allocated to a new GP at Milford before January 2020. This will be done by letter and there is no need for patients to do anything.

Also, from the end of December Dr Toni Benning will be leaving our Wistaria practice.

All of Dr Benning’s Patients will transfer automatically onto Dr Alice Mavrogordato’s  list on 1 January 2020.  There is no need for patients to do anything, you will be able to make appointments with Dr Mavro after this time.

As many of you will know, Dr Mavro has been a partner at the practice since 2012, and prior to that was one of our registrars.

Dr Jess Zhao joined us in early October and will be working three full days at both Wistaria & Milford from January 2020.  Dr Jess Zhao (Dr Jess) will have patient list.

Dr David Fowler will increase his sessions and work four days a week at Milford and will also increase his patient list size.

You will still be able to make appointments with Dr Janssen and Dr Mallik regardless of who your allocated partner is, as all patients are jointly registered with the practice.

We hope all patients will join our partners and staff in giving our doctors their full support.

If you have any requests regarding your allocated GP partner please write to the Practice Manager - Mrs Jan Lamont who will deal requests and contact patients accordingly. HOWEVER, please do not write to Wistaria and Milford Practice before January 2020 as we will be unable to deal with your requests.

The Comprehensive Assessment Clinic

Your GP can now refer you to the comprehensive Assessment Clinic which is held in the Forest Assessment Centre, Lymington Hospital.

The reason for the referral is for you to have a whole person “M.O.T” with a Nurse and a Doctor who will discuss you past medical history as well as your current health.  The Nurse and Doctor may also take your blood pressure, check your weight, organise a urine test, give you an ECG (electrocardiogram) as well as a full medical examination as part of your appointment – these are nothing to worry about, but help the Doctor and Nurse to help you.  If you would like, you can take someone with you to the appointment, and of course you will be able to ask any questions you may have.

Getting your medicines if there's a no-deal EU Exit

 

It is important that patients only order their repeat prescriptions as normal, and keep taking their medicines as normal.

The government is working closely with the NHS and suppliers to make sure medicines and medical products continue to be available in all scenarios.

Please keep ordering your repeat prescriptions and taking your medicines as normal.

The NHS, through your local doctor's surgery and pharmacy, will keep you informed if there are any changes.

It's very important you don't order more medicines than normal. If you do, then it may mean that other people won't be able to get their medicines.

The government has asked suppliers of medical goods to build up at least 6 weeks' worth of extra stocks above usual level.

It has also bought extra ferry capacity so medicines and medical products will be prioritisedfor import for you to continue to receive your medicines on time.

Occasionally, the NHS does experience temporary shortages of some medicines.

If this happens, you will be prescribed the best alternative to your usual medicine, as happens normally.

Over two-and-a-half million prescription items are dispensed in primary care alone in England every day, and the NHS has existing ways of making sure that you get your medicines and medical products, even under difficult circumstances.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight Sustainability and Transformation Partnership Invitation

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Sustainability and Transformation Partnership (STP) would like to invite you to join them to discuss their plans for the future of health and care in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.  

STP are hosting a series of events to discuss with local people, staff and their key stakeholders how they are responding to the commitments set in the national NHS Long Term Plan. STP will be describing their local priorities based on the opportunities available to them, the current challenges they face such as increasing demand and the availability of workforce and crucially, what the population has told them needs to change.

The event takes the format of a drop in session so you are welcome to go at any time during the three hours. There, STP will describe their plans for the future on topics such as mental health, prevention, cancer and GP services and ask people for their feedback.  STP will have a number of presentations throughout the evening, as well as a wellbeing area demonstrating their focus on staying well and preventing ill health.

New campaign, ‘Use the Right Service’, which helps people access the correct NHS service has been launched across south west Hampshire and Southampton.

'Use the Right Service’ has been launched across south west Hampshire and Southampton and promotes alternatives to A&E for non-emergencies, such as home care, pharmacies, GP services, 111 and Urgent Treatment Centres (UTCs), and is designed to support the reduction of pressure on A&E at Southampton General Hospital.

Over the coming months there will be promotions of the integrated, cross partner campaign, via radio advertising on Heart FM and Smooth FM (you can hear theradio ads here https://usetherightservice.com/ by scrolling to the bottom of the page), digital and social media updates, street and transport advertising, as well as spreading the message through the distribution channels of local partners, such as councils, schools and community centres.

Use the Right Service has its own website – https://usetherightservice.com/ – and has been formed through a collaboration of 10 partners across the region.

  ***NEW THIS YEAR - Sunday OVER 65 flu clinic at Wistaria Surgery ***

On Sunday morning, 29th September an Over 65 flu clinic will be held at Wistaria Surgery (to avoid the Saturday market).

If you cannot attend a weekend appointment, other dates are available.

We aim to vaccinate around 2,000 patients at the very start of the flu season and get off to the best possible start to protect our patients.

All of our OVER 65 patients can attend at either of the surgeries, whichever is most convenient for you.
 
OVER 65 means you will be age 65 or over on March 31st 2020.

If you have problems with online access please use Patient Access support links or the forgotten password links on the Patient Access website.
